Back to the “Vegan” 1940s

I’ve been watching the 1940s House to get me focused…. click above!

Tomorrow I am stepping back 100% into the 1940s…

As if turning “Vegan” wasn’t hard enough, 30 days into our 60 Day Fitness Challenge at work, the next 30 days will be trying to live on the rationing a Vegan would have had during WWII on the British home front.

This means no longer will I have bananas, granola/museli, ground meat substitute or any of the non-authentic extras that have made the last 30 day journey into Veganism a little easier..

I’ve given this a huge amount of thought… it has been really hard to find any 100% conclusive evidence of what substitutes “Vegans” would have received during WWII. I do know that vegetarians and vegans were given “special” ration books..

Vegetarians were given extra cheese instead of meat but as vegans would not have eaten cheese, meat, eggs or meat I can only conclude from the snippets of information I am reading on the web and in books, that “vegans” would have had extra rations such as nuts, dried fruit, lentils, split peas, dried beans etc to replace dairy, eggs and meat.

I am a busy working mum, financially and time challenged, so I have adapted the rationing allowance to something I feel was fairly accurate making one or two concessions to make things very slightly easier..

Rations + Vegan Rations (adult per week)

Bacon & Ham 4 0z (100g) – Vegan (dried fruit 4 0z)

Meat to the value of 1s and 2d – Vegan ( 1/2 lb of raw nuts + 1/2 lb split peas or lentils)

Butter 2 0z, Margarine 2 0z, Cooking fat 4 oz, cheese 2 oz – Vegan (concession- I will use a soy based vegan spread which tastes just like margarine and hopefully will work in cooking)

Milk 3 pints- Vegan (almond milk- this has been made since the middle ages as a milk substitute. I am presuming vegans would have made almond milk from nut rations they would have received instead of milk. My concession is that I will just buy the almond milk instead of making it)

Sugar 8 oz – Vegan (unrefined raw sugar cane)

Preserves 1lb every 2 months – Vegan no change

Tea 2 0z- Vegan no change

Eggs 1 shell egg a week or 1 packet of dried eggs every 4 weeks- Vegan (no eggs)

Sweets/Candy 12 oz each 4 weeks – Vegan no change

Todays preparation has mostly been reading and making sure I have fresh rations in the fridge and cupboard or at least on a list I can pick up from the store tomorrow… I also am making an eggless fruitcake as we speak. But everything seems to have gone wrong (but I’ll write about that tomorrow)

I will say that in proper 1940s fashion, the top of the cake which attached itself to the mini-cooker heating filament was hacked off with a spoon and served with a cuppa tea… I know this NEVER would have been wasted…

15 lbs dropped in 28 days

Just a quick update to let you know how I’m getting on with the 60 day fitness challenge” we are doing at work.

As part of the fitness challenge I have turned vegan for 60 days and am walking for 40 minutes nearly every day. I’ve been recording my daily calories out of interest and they are coming in between 1800 and 2200. I’ve eradicated all junk food and am sticking to basic wholefoods and lots of vegetables.

Instead of regular milk I am using almond milk and there are no eggs, meat or cheese.

There were vegans during WWII and infact the word VEGAN came about during WWII.

Up until now I have been experimenting with different regular recipes but this weekend I turn over to eating 100% authentic wartime recipes (converting them to vegan)

I’ll still be doing meat recipes too as my youngest Hobbit Emily really likes them!

A special thanks to “Liz Mednick” who has been sending me some wonderful recipes to assist me in eating wartime vegan! I can’t wait to start trying these out and to of course share them with others!

The 1940s UK Radio Station is on!

Well things happened in my life 4 or 5 months ago so I didn’t follow through when asked if I’d be interested in a presenter slot at The 1940s UK Radio Station. (in this wonderful day and age I can do this via Skype or audio files in my spare time)

But things are better at the moment and yesterday I was given the opportunity once again to develop a show based on the WWII Domestic Home-front which will of course incorporate some 1940s Experiment recipes and my weight loss journey!

I am very excited by this as many years ago I had a wonderful time developing a weekly podcast show called “Rural Radio” which was just so fun and awesome with all it’s wonderful guests!

This time I cannot let this second opportunity pass- it will appeal to my secret creativity and will also focus my mind on something productive rather than thinking about food too much. Find something you love I hear people say!

Sooo there are somethings I’ll need to do

a) Think of a name for the show
b) See if there is anyone out there who maybe interested in being interviewed about their love of the 1940s (I’ll send a few questions and you simply have to answer them and send me the audio file) or anything really!

THANK YOU to the 1940s UK Radio Station for this opportunity once more and for having faith in me and I’ll be working hard over the next couple of weeks to put together a showreel and 1st show…

PS If you have any ideas what you would personally LOVE to hear on a 1940s music radio show (music and also the inbetween bits!) please share below! Or how about some food related questions?

PPS THANK YOU xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Another 3 lbs off!

Firstly apologies! This is a crossover with my other blog http://www.southshorenow.ca/blogs/carolyn but I am challenged time wise but needed to tell you……

I lost again!

3 lb this week which makes 13 lbs in 3 weeks (since I started the 60 day fitness challenge). I AM SIMPLY BESIDE MYSELF with not only the weightloss (I’m eating tons.. wholefoods and plant based vegan diet of around 2000 cals a day) but the fact that I am walking… that’s right, getting of my arse and walking for 40 minutes every day.

Today I was at the track for 8:30 am and it was my best morning yet…. 13 laps in 31 minutes (non-stop) and my back pain was only minor. The best I could do when I started was 5 laps in 15 minutes and then I’d have to rest for 10 minutes before doing any more walking.

If you are big like me, walking is a great way to get yourself moving and today, at the track I saw a young mother with her baby in a pushchair on the track and an elderly gentleman with a walking stick exercising too! All shapes and sizes, some fit some not so……I feel right at home on the track and actually look forward to going. The feeling afterwards is exhilarating …

So what differences have I found and can I see?

Back pain: it’s still there when I exercise and somedays it is worse than others but generally it has improved enormously already. The other day I noticed I no longer get back pain stood at the kitchen sink!
Blood pressure & pulse: taken before I started the 60 day fitness challenge it was 176/88 and my pulse at rest was around 80. I took some readings the other day and my pulse was around 68 and my BP 126/69 (I have been eating lots of vegetables that are known for lowering blood pressure)
Fitness: as above! I seriously can’t believe it!
Clothes: I now have a few more items in my wardrobe I can fit into!
Body image: I still look scarily similar in shape to a TELETUBBY however my face is looking a little thinner I do believe!
Smile: my smile is bigger these days 🙂

I’ve a LONG LONG way to travel but I know I CAN do this…

Thanks to friends, work friends, blog friends and Facebook friends who have offered their support and encouragement- YOU ROCK!!!

NEXT STEP: Changing over to a 1940s Vegan diet

10 lbs off in 2 weeks! Yay!

This is awesome! Another 4 lbs OFF! Last week I was down 6 lbs and the 10 days before that I lost another 4……. to say I am pleased is an understatement!

Most of the food I am consuming (not all- I am slowly making the move over to 1940s vegan) would have been available to the 1940s vegan. The consumption of lots of fresh vegetables and fruit and wholefoods and NO junk seems to be the key- coupled with exercise.

As a big person it can be really hard to push yourself to do exercise especially if you have back & joint pains. BUT trust me, little by little it gets easier and you feel wonderful having achieved something positive. That’s how I’m feeling anyhow and I KNOW losing 100 lbs is indeed possible.

Weigh in tomorrow

I’ve worked so hard last week and this week…. I can now walk over 2 kms in 30 minutes! When I started walking 2 weeks ago I’d walk 1 km slowly, stop for at least 10 minutes to get my breath and then do another km. Now I’m doing 2.2 km in 30 minutes without stopping once!

Last week I lost 6 lbs! I know it won’t be as much this week but I’m still hoping for something worth jumping up and down about!

The China Study- just like the war

I was working, in my volunteer role, at Oak Island today… manning the reception centre, dressed in pirate gear, because I can..

After the tours take off I am on my lonesome so today I took with me my new book.. “The China Study”.

I’m only a few chapters in but briefly let me tell you it is about the most comprehensive nutritional study ever undertaken … part of the conclusions it draws (and has proved) is that reducing our animal protein consumption (meats, eggs, milk etc) to 5% or under and increasing our plant consumption has a remarkable effect on our bodies… coupled with wholefoods (rather than processed) and some daily exercise a “plant based diet” lowers blood pressure, prevents us from getting cancer, prevents and turns around heart disease and controls diabetes…

When you take a look at rations during WWII you notice that animal proteins were cut back and people ate lots more vegetables and complex carbohydrates like potatoes… the health of the nation really did improve.

I’ve always been so sure that adapting to a diet high in vegetables and fruits and low in animal protein is good for you and reading “The China Study” is confirming that..

Blood pressure down!

Ok I am seriously happy… over 3 weeks ago I went and had my blood pressure done a few times… it was up high each time… the highest reading being 176/88 and the lowest 169/84. (I had fallen off my 1940s plan and was eating crap again) Yesterday and today I have taken several readings… the highest being 130/82 the lowest 117/69. I’ve been on a 100% vegan diet for 21 days (and 11 days since starting the 60 day fitness challenge and walking 40 minutes each day)

I have been eating LOTS of foods/veggies that are recommended to lower blood pressure. http://whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=disease&dbid=15

Something MUST be working!!!

Tomorrow I start to plan my 1940s vegan diet….. THANK YOU for all the very helpful links, e-mails and information I have been receiving. I think with a bit of planning I can pretty much start moving forward with a fairly authentic 1940s WWII vegan diet sometime next week.
