Rationing Day 29 – I ate 8 points and feel guilty

So I’ve used up all my 16 points for the month now because this evening I had a craving for tinned peaches and luckily “Mr. Bill Brown” (he who runs the grocers on Victoria Road) had a few cans on the shelves when I went shopping yesterday. It’s early days for rationing, I’m sure it will be harder to find my favourite treat in a few more months!

Anyone who loves tinned peaches knows that it’s so easy to eat them all! The tin actually contained 2.5 very small peaches in juice. It was heaven. However, afterwards, I did give some thought to how precious that can of peaches would have been a year or so into rationing when things began to get very scarce. That can of peaches would have been shared among a complete family no doubt. I did feel a little guilty…

So apart from the peaches (which I ate 1/2 an hour ago), what else did I eat today?

Breakfast: Porridge with a spoonful of milled flax and a large cup of tea. I had coffee at work.

Lunch: I wasn’t hungry at my normal lunch time as I felt hot and bothered having walked back from work but when I did eat lunch an hour later than normal, it was leftover stew with some spinach leaves and two slices of bread. I drank water.

Dinner: Again I didn’t feel hungry but eventually ate around 7pm. On my menu I was down for making “vegetable mince” and mashed potatoes but I wasn’t fancying that so instead I had a bowl of lettuce topped with a baked potato (leftover from yesterday) that I chopped up and fried. Enjoyed a large mug of tea afterwards.

Supper: My appetite returned and I craved peaches so had the whole can! Enjoyed my final mug of tea!

I also had some cough sweets as my throat was scratchy and dry today.

Much love, C xxx

  1. Hi Carolyn , I love peaches too, I chop up mine and put in jelly, (like the big kid I am ) in various size tubs and eat this when I get peckish in the evenings. Or could you do a batter to pour over them or some sort of sponge, depending on your rations available. Just suggestions to make them go as far as possible. Keep going.

    Love Sandy

  2. A whole tin of peaches… outrageous! LOL!!

Yeah, tinned fruit like peaches, fruit salad and pineapple did become a rarity outside of the Spiv’s suitcase. So rare in fact, you may have given one as a birthday present to Grandma, who in turn would probably have made an upside down cake with it (using national flour naturally).

Look on the bright side. Tinned fruit today comes in juice rather than the heavy syrup it did up until the ’80s or ’90s. That would have ruined your entire week! 😁

And talking of tinned peaches, they always went rather well in a spam salad I seem to recall… 😋

  3. Actually, looking at that photo of lunch, I more often than not substitute spinach for lettuce myself.

Lamb’s Lettuce (though it’s not actually a lettuce, despite the name) is also a good swap, as both of them are far more nutritious than limp lettuce.

An interesting fact – cooked spinach is actually better for you than raw. The body can’t break down all the nutrition when raw apparently. Much the same with tomatoes too.

  4. Ooh you naughty girl, all your points in one go. 😉

Seriously though, that was a good day’s food. I too have been eating Jakemans cough sweets since I had a horrible sore throat, they are strangely good and very old fashioned tasting aren’t they.

  5. Looking at the chart, I’m wondering how many children were happy to age out of the cod liver oil ration.

  6. Totally agree about the peaches…they will be 25 points in no time! Lol enjoy them whilst you can. I live on stews, as they feel me up and are such a good source of vitamins (and it isn’t fattening!). My tea ration seems to be going down the quickest at the moment…must have a few more fresh mint teas (as I have loads of it growing in the garden!).

    • Mint tea..? Urgh!!

An ex of mine used to regularly make mint tea last thing at night. Claimed it was calming and helped her sleep. Just tasted of hot water with a Polo lobbed in it to me!

I guess I just don’t have the palate for herbal infusions. LOL!!

  7. I love your menu. At what time is your dinner and what time is your supper? In Canada, breakfast is early in the morning, lunch is around 12, and the last meal is dinner which is at 18 hrs. Do you eat before going to bed?

    • Same here Louise and yes at the moment I am having a snack in the evening but want to try and drop that habit eventually or at least swap it for a piece of fruit xxxx

  8. Carolyn you so deserve a break…enjoy. You do so much. During July do “lovely things” for yourself. Be kind to yourself. I’m so grateful for the effort you put in for all of us. 💕

  9. I’m late to reply but I did want to take the time to say what a wonderful idea to line the bowl of stew with baby spinach. LOVE IT!
