I’ve been receiving love letters for a year!

I’m a happily single, middle-aged woman who misses receiving letters the old-fashioned way.

During the past year I have received 24 letters from the USA following the back and forth letter writing and blossoming romance between Audrey and Charlie during WW2 and it’s brought a little light into my life.

The Flower Letters is such a unique concept, I needed to look forward to letters the slow way, to delay instant gratification, to remember how it was to correspond by letter.

I remember as an 18 year old girl, living in a crummy bedsit all alone, dating a 19 year old Aircraftsman (who became my husband for 25 years) and even then, in the 80’s, all our “courting” was done by letter! 2, 3, 4 page letters with doodles and little cut outs from magazines or newspapers. Receiving those letters meant everything and you had to wait…

The Audrey and Charlie letters reminded me of those times and it made me think how important those letters would have been during wartime, holding on to something precious, reread over and over.

I’ve now received all 24 of my letters over the course of a year, I highly recommend them.

  1. Great idea…We just ordered this through your link to be sent to our 89 year old mother. She will love it. We didn’t even know that this was out there. Thanks for sharing.

  2. I don’t know if my first response went through. If this is a duplicate, my apologies. This is a great idea. We ordered this through your link for my 89 year old mom. Thanks for sharing.

    • Oooo I’m sure she will love them! I’m going to treat myself to another story this winter, there is a new archeology story which I’m interested in! Thanks for using my link and I hope your Mum enjoys the letters you got for her xxxxx C

      • Just a quick follow up,

Mum just got her first Audrey Rose letter today and love it. She is excited about receiving letters each month.

Thank you for sharing this and bringing joy to a 89 year old whom you have never met. We are grateful for what you are doing.

      • Oh how wonderful! That arrived so quick! I have a little trouble reading Charlie’s handwriting but Audrey Roses handwriting is clearer but that is probably because her letters are on a plain light background and Charlie’s have lots of background pictures. I’m currently reading all mine again! C xxxx

  3. Morning Carolyn,
    What a brilliant Idea.
I have just ordered this for Wendy. I am not going to tell her, so shhh!
I do hope she likes them.

Good luck with the ration food diet starting soon.
I have recently had to alter my diet as I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic. Dietician is not worried about my sugar intake, but is very worried about my carbohydrate intake. It isn’t easy as I enjoyed my Weetabix and sandwiches, now swapped out for home made smoothies, and home made salads. I am also down to 1 heaped spoonful of sugar in my tea. I’m trying to wean myself off sugar in tea (was 2 teaspoons).

    • Hi Paul, great to hear from you and I hope you and Wendy are generally well apart from your diabetes type 2. Yes, the wonderful carbs!!! How did you find out about your diabetes? Did you have any symptoms or was it through a routine wee/blood test? Hope everything works out well for you with the diet change and hope Wendy loves her letters xxx C

      • Hi Carolyn,
I have been having a lot of blood tests from my GP surgery. They have put me on statins for cholesterol, and have been keeping an eye on my sugar levels. I was called in as my sugar level was 50. Two weeks later I had to have a fasting blood test which gave a level of 47 – 2 above the type 2 level. I’m going to try to control it with diet for 3 months. If unsuccessful then they will start me on medication.
This all comes from the fact that I have been having prostate problems for quite a few years, and after I approached them with an E-consult, stating my overnight trips to the loo was increasing – it took 18 months before they finally got back in touch. I then told them I was going private to get tests & treatment. They then started taking a great deal of interest in me. culminating in statins and possibly diabetes medication.
My prostate treatment is just complete. I had a Urolift procedure on 10th May followed by a bout of UTI – which wasn’t pleasant.

      • Oh gosh, you’ve been going through it and some! 18 months is a long time to wait!!! I do hope you’ll feel better over the coming months with the new diet and treatments. My cholesterol is highish too. I am getting another blood test later this year to see if losing weight and eating healthier will show a turn around. Keeping my fingers crossed but both my parents have high cholesterol (and are on statins) and they are slim and eat pretty healthy so it might just be something that runs in the family. Take care xxx C

  4. These letters sound intriguing but aside from that made me realize that I had letters from my Dad to Mom during the war. I couldn’t find them but my son steered me in the right direction and there they were. The only letters are the ones Dad sent to Mom, I don’t know what happened to hers. But anyway, Dad was in the Coast Guard and some of his letters were in Morse Code for my mom to decipher. Fun!

Anyway, short story long, thanks for the reminder about letters. Glad I found my parents correspondence. I may have to check out the Flower Letters as well!
