Incoming recipe… after a long break

Hi all,

I’ve got half a marrow and fancy a pudding so later I’m going to bake a “Marrow Charlotte” and will film the recipe for my blog/YouTube. It will just be a very quick recipe but at least it’s a recipe and might be enough to light that spark again and get back to posting/creating again. It’s from the book “Health for All – Wartime Recipes” by Margaret Y. Brady M.Sc and it’s one of my favourite books.

I will do a proper catch up video in due course but for now it will be taste testing “Marrow Charlotte” – it sounds so unusual I just have to bake it tonight and share it with you.

Also, am currently looking for ways to cut my spending down. I don’t know about you but I’m simply horrified at the amount I spend on food. I’m going to start using up all the hoarded dry/tinned supplies in my pantry to offset the cost of my grocery bills!

Love to all,

C xxx

  1. Oh lovely! Excited to have another recipe trial from you Carolyn !

I too am astonished at how much I am spending on food lately. I pushed myself to have a ‘ration book meals’ week a couple of weeks ago and was once again over the moon with the minimal spends. I ate very well all week and did not feel like anything was lacking from my meals. Note to self….must try harder ha ha

Hope you and your family are all well !

    • Hi Melanie, lovely to hear from you and thanks for commenting. I’ve been eating mostly off ration for ages now and it is soooo expensive. Must try harder here too! C xxxx

  2. What an unusual recipe, I look forward to seeing how it turns out. It is not just our grocery bills that are extraordinarily high, my electric bill has doubled. I am walking a lot so as not to use fuel in the car which they would have done during the war but I would love some tips to keep expenses down.

  3. Hi Judi, you are so right, it is literally everything!!!! I was comparing what I used to spend 5 years ago on food and bills and how much I spend today and was shocked!!!! C xxx

  4. Its lovely to see you posting again carolyn, have missed your posts, sounds very intriguing and look forward to the results, hope u are well. Xx

  5. Oh, welcome home, Carolyn! Been much too long since I heard from you! Looking forward to anything you want to share, and recipes, of course. I already have a question – Can you please explain what a marrow is? I’m in Australia and have never seen one here, although I imagine we’ll have some kind of substitute. Prices are just as horrifying here, as well, and not much sign of any improvement in the near future. Hope you’re well, and we’ll hear more soon. God bless you. Pat. xx

    • Hi Pat, thanks for leaving a message – a marrow is essentially a courgette (zucchini) that has been left to mature and grow much larger, with a harder, more ripened skin and a milder flavour. Both are varieties of the Cucurbita pepo species, but marrow varieties are specifically bred for their larger size and ability to be stored, while courgettes are harvested when their fruits are young, small, and tender. – prices are just horrendous everywhere right now it seems xxxx C

    • Thank you, so sorry to cause concern. I’ve been around a bit on social media but had been really struggling with burnout and then recently a new promotion/ job role…. but I had a week off and feel a bit brighter hence me wanting to try and post something before returning to work tomorrow xxxx

  6. So happy to see you in my inbox!! I hope all is well, you have been missed. Any tips for saving at the grocer will be welcome, I’ve started mixing soy mince into ground meat to stretch the meal.

  7. Totally agree Carolyn. Here in New Zealand the cost of groceries has more than doubled. We are both vegetarian/vegan which helps to keep the grocery bill down. Anything that helps to stretch what we have in the pantry is very welcome. Thank you.

  8. So happy to see your posts once again. Groceries are atrocious! Thank goodness for the summer garden. But even that is on the wane now here in Minnesota. Look forward to hearing more from you.
