I’m running the London Marathon…

What a whirlwind of emotion, of disappointment and elation. I never seem to have a happy medium but I can’t complain as in 2017 I am

“RUNNING THE LONDON MARATHON FOR THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION” …..(drops to floor in utter shock) – CLICK HERE

Yes I’m shouting that out loud in a hugely excited and animated way with a smidgen of pure terror thrown in for good measure!

carolyndonateTEAM LEGION selected me as one of their charity runners. Just the week before I had got the bad news after applying through the Virgin London Marathon ballot that I didn’t get through so then I applied to the Royal British Legion, filled in their application form and gave them my reasons for wanting to do the London Marathon for them. The chances of getting chosen are VERY remote… so to get this wonderful news last night has filled me with joy.

To be honest it’s been my saviour right now.

I’d been training for the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon to walk/jog for the ‘Children’s Hospital Charity’ through my employer http://www.pmsdiecasting.co.uk, when two days before the race I was up all night with a horrible ‘vomiting and D’ (I can’t say that word and definitely can’t spell it!). Regardless we caught the train to York and convinced myself that by Sunday morning I’d be OK. Although I wasn’t sick anymore the D’s continued and by Saturday evening I was so dehydrated I had stopped peeing…

Sunday morning still no pee. I got dressed in my Marathon gear, ordered the taxi to the starting line and 5 minutes before it arrived promptly had a gushing nosebleed. My daughter begged me not to run, “your ill, don’t do it” and a call from my brother in Australia knocked some sense into me and at the last moment I withdrew and went back to bed.

Later in the day we went to the finish line to watch my work colleague Alicja finish her first Marathon for the charity we were fundraising for in an incredible 6 hours and 4 minutes!

It was so emotional to watch…it really was. And thank you to all who supported as we were able to raise £750 and reach our goal for the children’s hospital.

The reason this unexpected news has been my saviour is that for the past 3 or 4 weeks my eating has started to go off the rails. I’ve eaten chocolate, crisps, and lots of cake and cheese and my 1940’s eating had gone out the window. That horrid feeling of “I’m-slowly-losing-control-and-all-this-weight-I’ve-lost-will-go-back-on-again” was taking over. Infact over the last 3 or 4 weeks I put on 10 lbs…

I weighed in the other day at 260 lbs (still 85 lbs down from my heaviest ever but brought my weight loss back up to only 45 lbs this year)

NOW, with this news, I have focus, I have a really big challenge ahead and I LOVE challenges!

For TEAM LEGION I will be raising £2000 and raising awareness of the Royal British Legion and what they do for ex-service people and veterans.

For myself, my own personal challenge will to be lose 60 lbs in 6 months and run the London Marathon in under 6 hours.

Today I’ve been back on my rationing plan and today I am full of hope 🙂

Lots of love

  1. Go you! a great cause which I will support in a minute 😀 (sorry to hear the previous run had to be cancelled though)

  2. I think it’s brilliant for you to take on this challenge, such motivation not long before Christmas doesn’t usually happen lol, we are all thinking about food and drink, such a great cause too, you’ll smash it! Lots of luck xxx

  3. Carolyn and for any one else who is trying to lose weight and do it healthily. I have been using CRON-O-Meter web site to track what I’m eating, my weight, blood sugars, body fat, sleep, morning blood pressure, and exercise for the last 60 days. This is the longest I have used any of these programs available on the Net. There are several other categories if you want to use them. It will also give you targets for different styles of eating if you are interested in that sort of stuff. The best part is all of this is FREE. I plan on buying the up-grade just to support the site after taxes and tags for the car.

Do whatever it takes to keep motivated for moving towards a healthy weight. Mine is, my knees are shot from pounding a concrete factory floor for 40 years while being obese. Along with watching my mother and mother-in-law needing the special equipment for obese people to be moved at the end of their lives on-n-off the commode.

    • I’m going to
Look into the website you are using as I need to lose a bit of weight although I really do love the 1940,s rationing food system but find it hard to stick to when you have a family that doesn’t want to go along with it but I’m going to try and stick to it between now and Christmas, here’s hoping xxx

      • It is really hard when you are trying to feed others who don’t need to lose weight or aren’t interested or feel threatened because you want/need to. Hang in there!

One of the things I discovered while logging everything I eat and drink was, I wasn’t getting enough vitamins and minerals in my diet from what I was eating. So I’ve started taking a few supplements to get the numbers up where they should be and I’m beginning to feel better and have more energy.

      • Yes I’ve heard that before about taking vitamin supplements so I will include those, just getting myself geared up to start and get organised with meal plans xx

      • Andrea – Be sure and take them with a meal, for some reason the body absorbs them better. I’m thinking the body thinks they are part of the foods you just ate. You know, I don’t see why you can’t do both; eat Forties style and keep track of what you eat. It would be interesting to see just how nutritionally sound the Rationing diet really was by what we know today about nutrition.

        Good luck!

      • Yes I will take them with food thanks, I have tried forties rationing briefly before and really enjoyed it so im looking forward to trying it again, I’m sure it is definitely beneficial and provides a healthier diet! Thanks for your advice xx

  4. You can do it! My dear daughter, who was a bigger gal, and also suffers with crohns disease, quietly trained in that horrid heat and humidity we were hit with in the Toronto area this summer. By October she had done TWO marathons! She has lost a tremendous amount of weight and she looks so fit an healthy and she feels fantastic. Just remember, SLOW AND STEADY wins the (personal) race. We will be cheering for you back in Canada. (I have a pal running in the London too!)

  5. Hello Carolyn, I haven’t commented before…I love your blog! I was wondering if I could be bold and make an appeal. Would you consider whether perhaps the illnesses and injuries and cravings you’ve been having lately could be attributed to the low-fat vegan diet you’ve been eating? I do believe veganism can be very helpful in the short term, but if kept too long can cause breakdowns. I agree factory farmed animals are a concern, but perhaps a small amount of animal products from an organic and natural and humane farmer? I hope I don’t offend; I just wanted to appeal to you to look into it, as, although I don’t know you, yet I know you a little from your blog. A Life unburdened by Richard Morris, Weston A. price KFoundation, and Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride may be helpful resources. In any case, I want to cheer you on and wish you all the best! God bless you.

    • Thank you for your concern Karla and useful resource information. I was a vegan for several years but am a vegetarian now (although I still have some vegan days as I eat very little dairy generally)…. alas the binging is in my psyche as when I was a meat and fish eater I still binged on choccy. It’s much more under control these days though…sometimes I have to have a week or two off and just get it out of my system and then just move forward. My personality is all or nothing!! As for eating meat it’s just something I am physically and emotionally not able to do anymore. It’s just a way of life for me now and it was a long process getting there (having run a smallholding in my past with sheep, cattle, goats, chickens, geese, pigs etc). xxxxxx I think at the bottom of the problems I’ve had over the last year or two have been stress. Psychologically I’m now in a much happier place emotionally as I don’t feel torn anymore so more at peace and apart from the V & D recently the last time I was ill was January with a double pneumonia. I think its the long days/commuting etc that are making me tired as I really do feel regenerated after a weekend! LOL! Anyway do appreciate your lovely helpful message. Thank you for leaving it, much love C xxx

      • Carolyn, thank you for replying and considering my comment…I’m so glad you’re vegetarian now. Sometimes some cheese or an egg just hits the spot. Yes, just from what I know from your blog you’ve been under tremendous stress. And you’ve managed it beautifully. Do I understand about the choccy cravings…oh my goodness, I’m dealing with it myself. ☺️I look forward to reading more about your adventures! God bless you.

  6. Re not being able to spell the ‘D’ word – I used to teach adult literacy and had one class of moms. One week they asked if we could work on letters to teachers, notes explaining why child had been off school ill, and the kind of spellings required for that. I mentioned this to a colleague who told me she had a great way to remember how to spell the ‘D’ word, I’ve certainly not forgotten it! Here goes:
Diarrhoea – diarrhoea is a rascal running heavily over each ankle!
