Faux bangs with an old sock

So waiting here for Tropical Storm Irene to share its winds and rain with us here in Nova Scotia, I decided it was about time to TRY a 1940s’s hairstyle, just for the fun of it, and take a photo… I haven’t really tried anything like this yet. For one thing I am self conscious of my fat face and I do lose my self confidence at times. There are always so many things I really want to do but talk my way out of them..

Taking the bull by the horns I went for it…. found a video on YouTube about “faux bangs” and substituted a rat (the foamy thingy you wrap your hair around)  for a slightly stinky sock and did my best…

It was rather fun in the end ….

  1. We’ll meet again,
Don’t know where, don’t know when
But I know we’ll meet again some sunny day
    Keep smiling through
    Just like you always do
    ’til the blue skies
drive the dark clouds far away……………………

You look lovely C, as always xxx

  2. I think it looks great! I just found your blog and spent most of last night reading it. It is wonderful! I’m currently reading a book by Lilian Harry, The Corner House Girls about girls in London during the war. It was by chance I came across your blog as I was searching for what rations they had then.

Can I ask how you got your hands on cookbooks with war time recipes? I found many from UK websites, but not much on Canadian. I think I’m going to join you on this as a way to cook for my family in a more healthy way.

Thanks so much for doing this! You are a very courageous woman 🙂

    • Hi Marina- I only moved to Canada in 2004 so I have to say, for nostalgia purposes, most of my recipes are ones found in British cook books or shared recipes passed down…. I do pick up some Canadian and American recipes too so maybe I should incorporate some of those too as photographed recipes… I mean fundamentally much was the same, rations, eat lots of veggies, less meat… Thanks for leaving your comment- i must check out that book!! xxxx

  3. Don’t be self-conscious – you look great! I have a short fringe so have never been successfully able to pull off that fringe without it falling out. You look great though. 🙂

    KB xx

    • You mean a permanent 1940s hairstyle? Oh my! I’m not sure but I would LOVE (when I feel more comfortable with my body size) to dress head to toe in the clothes, hairstyle and makeup for the day and prance around at work or something:)

  4. Way to go, Carolyn! I love the b&w shot especially, as it looks so authentic! Can’t wait to see your next foray into the 40’s style!

  5. Thanks so much Cynthia… I think when I’ve lost a bit more weight (still quite self conscious) am going to do some fun retro cooking videos in B & W and have some fun with the recipes…. get all dressed up in a 1940s pinny or something- tee hee
